2025-11-06 | University of Duisburg-Essen | The Hidden Curriculum | Daniel I. Rees | In cooperation with the RGS Econ and the RTG "Regional Disparities and Economic Policy", STAIRS is offering a full-day workshop entitled "The Hidden Curriculum" on November 6. It will be held by Prof. Daniel I. Rees, a professor in the Department of Economics at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The workshop is subtitled "Everything You Weren't Taught in Graduate School about Doing Applied Research", and is intended to serve as a practical guide for doctoral students in applied research. Among other things, it will cover the nuts and bolts of writing and publishing. |
2025-11-21, 9am-5pm | FH Dortmund, TBA | Good Research Practice | Valentina Vasilov | The workshop “Good Research Practice” provides specific knowledge on the topic of research ethics, allowing the participants to reflect their own guiding values and attitudes in their role as researchers. The workshop furthers an understanding of the basic rules and values of the responsible conduct of research in all its stages, according to local, national and international regulations and guidelines. The participants will explore the differences and grey areas between good scientific practice, questionable research practice and scientific misconduct. They will learn how misconduct can be prevented and should be addressed and dealt with in case it occurs. Causes and consequences of scientific misconduct at all levels will also be addressed. The participants are offered opportunities to acquire and practice the necessary skills on the proper handling of conflict situations for a responsible conduct of research. Participants are encouraged to discuss potential questions, ambiguities and doubts from their own research practice. |

2025-07-21 to 2025-07-22 | TU Dortmund University, CDI 120 | How To Do Interdisciplinary Research | Hendrik Woiwode | The workshop equips early career researchers with essential tools to navigate the complexities of interdisciplinary research. Over two days, participants explore key tensions—epistemological, identity, and evaluative—through interactive inputs, case-based exercises, and peer feedback. They learn to apply practical methods such as boundary objects, identity narratives, and interdisciplinary evaluation metrics. By developing personalized action plans and toolkits, attendees gain actionable strategies to enhance collaboration across disciplines. The workshop fosters reflective practice and provides a foundation for sustained interdisciplinary engagement, with a follow-up session to support implementation and peer exchange. |
2025-01-23 and 2025-01-30 | TU Dortmund University, SRG 1, Room 3.031 | Research Data Management | Bernd Zey, Wibke Kleina (RDM TUDo), Philip Raatz, Patrick Thiel (Project INF), Edzer Pebesma | The workshop introduces the participants to the guidelines of research data management and FAIR principles. They learn how to create a data management plan with the DFG checklist & RDMO. The participants acquire knowledge about coding principles and version control using the example of Git. They also understand file formats and APIs for spatial and spatio-temporal data. The two-day workshop is divided into a self-learning phase, an on-site workshop, and a feedback meeting at a later date via Zoom. |
